Here is a great idea from Miles @ UKEonomics to make your own spool clamps from scrap wood, a few bolts and wing-nuts.

The quantities of materials listed on the page provide enough to make 5 ukulele spool clamps. You should be able to pick up all the materials from your local hardware store or DIY retailer for a few pounds. You can get the sticky backed felt here and also use it to make your own felt ukulele picks. A set of 6 small spool clamps at StewMac are over $25.

A simple yet effective way of producing several sturdy DIY Ukulele Spool Clamps to be used for repair or build work on ukulele. The spool clamps can be used to hold the top and back panels of the ukulele tight to the side panels while applying and drying glue for ukulele repair work or ukulele building.
