Ukulele Luthier Wars at the Ukulele Festival of Scotland

Posted on Updated on

It was a beautiful weekend at the Crichton Estate in Dumfries for the first ever Ukulele Festival of Scotland, a spectacular event in support of the Ukulele Kids Club UK, the weather and grounds were equally outstanding.

However the mood in the bazaar was intense, two rival Ukulele luthiers jibe and taunt each other as they ply their wares. They raise their Ukuleles in preparation for battle…. “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine…”

Ukulele Luthier Wars

Of course not! This is Tom Ziegenspeck of Ziegenspeck Ukuleles and Marco Todeschini of Antica Ukuleleria, two of the most talented young Ukulele luthiers of our time (not to mention terrific chaps).

Ukulele Luthier Wars

It was great to see Tom my young friend from Germany again, to catch up on his progress and check out the fantastic instruments he has been making, during his time at Pete Howlett‘s workshop in Wales. We had a good chat about neck joints and even the possibility of a workshop visit! He has also developed a retro-fit Ukulele pick-up which is very simple to install into any acoustic Ukulele.

Tom’s stylish electric Ukuleles have a tantalising finish and an even more tantalising sound! Their lines and shapes are always a pleasure to behold. Tom’s impeccable craftsmanship is echoed wonderfully in both his solid-body work, as with his acoustic instruments.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Marco, another highly talented young luthier, this time from Italy. We discussed his work and also his neat ideas for a Ukulele practice mute (see close-up picture below) and a kazoo type gadget that you can fit on your uke, to emulate a resonator sound. He also told me a great way to make your own radius board, without the need for any CNC cutting, so I can’t wait to make myself one of those and write it up for the blog.

As well as his beautifully made acoustic Ukuleles, amongst the more adventurous players the “Ukuleles From Outer Space” (UFOS) were the talk of the fest. His unique creation is a curious, space-age amalgam of the traditional and the modern: resins, metal, cutting edge technology and Aquila Ukulele strings.

Taking him 4 years to design and develop, these interstellar Ukuleles come with a choice of colours or wooden fascias, they have a great sound when connected to an amp and they also have a light up ‘soundhole’ which glows when you strum!

Along with meeting these two great young talents of the Ukulele building world, I also had the pleasure of being entertained by some of the Ukulele playing world’s elite! I enjoyed a couple of workshops and had the humbling experience of meeting none other than James Hill and Manitoba Hal Brolund. Chatting, jamming and drinking with some of the UK’s if not the world’s most entertaining Ukulele artists: Ken Middleton, Mike Hind, Dead Mans Uke, Mersey Belles, Mother Ukers and Krabbers to name just a few.

The Ukulele Festival of Scotland put itself firmly on the map and will soon be added as a must on any Ukulele players list of annual events. I for one can’t wait to see what they have in-line for next year, well worth every inch of the long journey!

DIY Ukulele Rosette Jig

Image Posted on Updated on

DIY Ukulele Rosette Jig

For a cheap and simple DIY Ukulele Rosette Jig, you can use double-sided tape to stick a 60mm Ø disk of plastic (at least 2mm thick) to any small slab of flat wood which has a layer of parcel tape applied to the surface, ideally thick ply or MDF.

Then you just bend strips of ukulele purfling around the edge of the plastic disk and glue each layer to the previous one. You can use map pins to hold each end of the purfling in place as you add the next layer. Another neat idea is to sandwich small (1.5mm thick) rectangles of shell between two layers of the ukulele purfling strips, to simply and swiftly put together a really fancy ukulele rosette. See example in image above.

Be careful but not shy with the glue, you need to make sure everything is well stuck and the parcel tape on the base will prevent your ukulele rosette from sticking too badly to the surface. Once the rosette is inlaid you will have to scrape back and sand down the finished soundboard surface, removing any excess glue in the process.

Again be careful when removing the pins and releasing the rosette from your DIY Ukulele Rosette Jig, no matter how well it has been made the ukulele rosette will be a delicate item, until inlaid into the ukulele soundboard.

Here’s the almost finished article, set in to a solid Mahogany soundboard, using my DIY Dremel Inlay Jig (which I will be blogging about in the near future). A very handy jig that allows for incredibly accurate and fast rosette channel cutting for any size ukulele rosette… when used in the right hands 😉

All thanks go to the fantastic luthier, tutor and mentor Peter Barton for this gem.

Wooden Ukulele Purfling Strips – Best Buy

Image Posted on Updated on

Here is a great deal if you are looking for a bundle of Black-White-Black wooden purfling strips to decorate your ukulele builds with. This is a quick way to build up rosettes and purfling decoration around the sound-hole or outer rim of your ukulele, with more than enough to decorate one side of a tenor ukulele in each strip, it will take a fair while to use this lot up.

Online Ukulele Purfling & Rosette builder

Image Posted on Updated on

This is a really handy tool that I stumbled on from Gurian Instruments for planning out ukulele rosette or purfling colour combinations and patterns. It looks a little complicated at first, although when you get used to the interface it’s quite simple and very versatile.

The video tutorials are really useful and will help you understand the Purfling Builder and it’s capabilities. There are a good few choices of colour and material; using a variety of pattern overlays and thickness of purfling, you have an almost limitless array of potential ukulele purfling and ukulele rosette designs.

The only addition I’d like to see is a way to save the progress of a design so you can come back to it at a later date, or perhaps some templates to start from. What would you like to see added or altered?

Professional Luthier Interview – Beau Hannam

Image Posted on Updated on

“If you distilled the time it took for 4 luthiers to learn what they teach at a school – you’re probably buying at least 40-100 years of knowledge…”

Beau Hannam - Professional Ukulele Luthier

Beau Hannam – Professional Ukulele Luthier

Beau Hannam Guitars & Ukuleles – Grand Junction, Colorado, USA

An accomplished Ukulele and Guitar builder, Beau’s inlay and purfling work is some of the finest I have seen. His attention to detail and generosity in sharing knowledge, make him a worthy addition to any social media follow list. With mitres and ‘bee-stings’ that would make any violin builder jealous, give him true contender status for the crowns currently held by other inlay specialists and builders of this genre.

Tell me about your journey… Were you a player first? What inspired you to take the plunge and build?

I have been playing since I was about 10 years old. Over time my playing developed into finger-style which lead me to discover great players and hand built instruments. I found Cumpiano’s book on guitar making (the best book of luthiery at the time) at a second-hand book sale, this was the beginning of it all. I read it cover to cover and in 2003, then I went to study instrument making at Gilet Guitars in Sydney Australia (where I’m from). I was there for some time as a student, then I was offered a job where I stayed on making Gilet guitars and teaching students until about 2011, when I got married and moved to Colorado.

In the beginning what was the building process like? Were there any unforeseen events?

My early days were actually much easier than my current position. At Gilet guitars I entered a very large workshop, where all the jigs were made long ago, the processes were established, and they had a lot of expensive machinery to help with all of that. Such is the benefit of learning at a luthiery school, they are expensive but worth it, as you are paying relatively little money for something that usually can’t be bought – i.e. time and knowledge.

If you distilled the time it took for 4 luthiers to learn what they teach at a school – you’re probably buying at least 40-100 years of knowledge, for very little.

Beau Hannam - Professional Ukulele Luthier

What choices were you faced with during the build process?

The choices were what any luthier or artist or maker of handmade things has to face – A life time of doing what you love for very little return. Being a luthier is a strange and unique thing, in what other job can you be one of the best in the world at what you do, but be living on minimum wage? This is the choice that you must face as a luthier.

Tool choices, 3 things – a Block Plane, a chisel and a scraper. I think an instrument could be made with these 3 things… perhaps some glue too now I think of it!

What advice did you seek and where did you get it?

I ask (AND GIVE) any and all questions to any luthier, not to steal ideas but to learn and broaden my understanding. To know the top thickness of another luthiers soundboard isn’t a sure way to make a good instrument, but it is always interesting to hear what people are up to.

To NOT know something is not a dishonour of knowledge. Not to ask what you don’t know because your to proud (etc) is the worst thing I feel. I never feel bad for not knowing something and always ask, no matter how stupid the question – and I pass on this ideal to whoever asks.

So the short answer to the question “What advice did you seek and where did you get it? ” is I seek any advice from everyone!

Beau Hannam - Professional Ukulele Luthier

What about the results of your first attempts at building? Were you delighted or devastated?

My first 3 instruments were a 000, resonator and 00. All were excellent and not because I was excellent but because the school I went to was excellent. I took notes, took photos etc and asked questions.

What motivated you to continue and become a professional luthier?

The motivation for me was easy, being a luthier is the only thing I…

1 – love doing
2 – am good at

Where are you now with your luthiery and what do you see for the future?

Since moving to Colorado I had to set up 2 workshops (due to winter) and re-made all the jigs, bought the machinery and tools needed, its very expensive to start with nothing and buy it all at once!

So now I’m up and running, it’s going good, I’m developing faster ways to do some tricky things, so hopefully my wait list will get shorter as I get faster.

The future is, basically, 40 more years of doing exactly the same thing but just looking for ways to do it better, or doing it the same way but at a higher standard, be it faster, cleaner, nicer aesthetics etc. I’m not a corporation with shareholders that need to see a 20% growth every year… forever. I simply do the best I am able, as much as I am able.

Beau Hannam - Professional Ukulele Luthier

How about an insight into your luthier’s philosophy? Do you have a message to the amateur luthier community?

I’d advise all to make beautiful things – the world is full of cheap ugly things.

If you can’t make, or strive to make an instrument that is more beautiful than the tree that the wood comes from, then I don’t think you should be making instruments.

Does that sound too harsh? It isn’t meant to sound harsh, I’m just sick of looking at utilitarian objects which are made to make a few people a lot of money. I see that the world would be a much better place if a lot of people made beautiful things with a view of less profit… Power to the 99% 🙂
